8 nov 1864 ano - President Lincoln was Elected For a Second Term
Descrição:
In the election of 1864, there were only two candidates. The first candidate was Abraham Lincoln, who ran under the Republican Party. The other candidate was his former Civil War General, Democratic candidate George B. McClellan. Because the Election took place during the American Civil War, the states loyal to the Union were the only participants. Lincoln’s second term was in doubt as the Civil War was lasting longer than expected. Another reason for doubt of his reelection was due to the Northern Democrats believing the hopes of preserving the Union were dismayed following the Emancipation Proclamation. The Republican Party, however, still believed the emancipation of slaves was not being accomplished quickly enough. The Republican Party also believed Lincoln’s terms of the Confederate States being readmitted into the Union were too lenient. Against the odds, Abraham Lincoln was elected for a second term but failed to serve it through as he was assassinated.
