After being defeated by Prussia and losing Italy, Austria compromised and established a dual monarchy. Austria was divided in two, and the Magyars gained virtual independence for Hungary. The new Austro-Hungarian Empire shared the same monarch and major common ministries but dealt with its own ethnic minorities. Austria-Hungary was a scattered hodgepodge of Germans, Magyars, Italians, Czechs, Poles, and Slavic groups. It had economic and military power, but its various ethnic groups undermined unity, which would be a source of conflict for its entire existence.
