The terrorist attacks of 9/11 resulted in polarization in American politics in many ways. National security was one matter that caused polarization. Conservatives supported homeland security in their increase in national security measures, however, many liberals saw this as violation of their civil liberties. The 9/11 attacks also resulted in an increase in religious and racial tensions. Many Muslim American suffered prejudice. This led to polarization in American politics on issues related to religious freedom and immigration policies. The issues that arose as a result of the attacks such as national security, terrorism, and religious/racial issues only widened the gap between conservatives and liberals.
