Roosevelt (TR) tried to make a come back (become president again), but the republican party rejects him and nominates Taft.

In response, TR makes the “Bull Moose” party and causes the republican Party to split; conservatives (generally against change and wanted Taft) vs progressives (who wanted change and TR).

Taft was more conservative, Roosevelt (TR) was more progressive.

Election of 1912 major players:
Taft = Republican, 3.5 million votes.
TR = Bull Moose, 4.1 million
Wilson = democrat, 6.3 million

Wilson wins w/ 41% of the popular vote. It a surprising win; democrats had been very behind since the Civil War. Because the republican votes were split, Wilson won.
