The rebellion against James II, was the Monmouth Rebellion, took place in 1685. It was an attempt by James Scott, the Duke of Monmouth and an illegitimate son of Charles II, to overthrow James II and claim the throne for himself. Monmouth landed in Dorset with a small force of men and declared himself king, hoping to gather support as he marched towards London. However, his force was quickly defeated by James II's army at the Battle of Sedgemoor, and Monmouth was captured and later executed. The rebellion was largely supported by Protestants who opposed James II's Catholicism and his perceived attempts to reintroduce Catholicism to England. The rebellion ultimately failed,
