The RDS-1 was the first atomic bomb launched by the Soviet Union. The design for the project started in April of 1946 at the Kurchatov Institute. The power of the explosion was the equivalent of 22 tons of TNT. It had a solid plutonium core manufactured at Chelyabinsk-40. For the test, they created houses made of wood and bricks, a bride, a simulated metro railway, 50 aircraft, 1500 animals, 100 guns and mortars, and other armoured hardware. The explosion ended up being 50 percent more destructive than predicted.
