My paternal grandfather chose to immigrate to Texas instead of California, which was a common choice among my family members who immigrated to the U.S. During the 1970s, many of my great uncles and other relatives came to the same area to work in agriculture. Most of them returned to their families in Mexico, but they talked about how the U.S. offered new opportunities for better economic prospects. This sparked my grandfather's curiosity, and he also decided to immigrate to the U.S. When I spoke with him, he mentioned that working conditions were challenging, but he felt welcomed at times. However, he ultimately decided to return to Guanajuato, Mexico. It was interesting to note that while many family members immigrated to the U.S. for better economic opportunities, they never saw themselves staying permanently, and were always on the move.
