In 1870, the Fruitvale village became a section in Oakland by Henderson Luelling. The village got its name from the fruit orchards that Luelling created. The population in Oakland may have been big but there was a low population in the village until the 1960s-70s. The neighborhood experienced an increase in population, in particular with Latinos.
