During the Watergate Scandal, Nixon decided to appoint Cox to investigate the topic. When appointed, Cox immediately demanded that the White House give up the tapes. Nixon did not like the idea and asked his New Attorney General to fire Cox. Richardson refused to fire him as did his assistant. Both decided to resign and Solicitor General would end up firing Cox. All this would happen in one day which is referred to as the "Saturday Night Massacre" This would drop Nixon's ratings tremendously and talk of impeachment would begin.
