Founded by a group of Puritans (branch of Protestants who wanted to purify the Church of England from all Catholic influences); the colony was much more successful than Jamestown for many reasons:
- Most of the colonists were members of family units, meaning there was a stable and self-sufficient population (this also led to a reliance on child labor rather than slavery, meaning slavery would never become as big here as in other colonies)
