Jamestown was established by the Virginia Company and very quickly turned out to be a disaster:
- most who came to colonize the area were very unfamiliar with how to run a colony; many only there to get rich and find gold
- very few women involved, which meant a small and not self-sufficient population
- somewhat questionable relationships with the Native Americans there
