Sofia Mendoza, an activist and co-founder of the United People Arriba organization, organized and carried out a student walkout at Theodore Roosevelt Junior High School to address the mistreatment of Mexican American students. Latino students were being expelled for minor infractions and denied access to advanced courses and textbooks because school administrators did not think they were equipped to have these resources. After her demands failed to be heard by the school, Mendoza, parents, students, and the Black Berets for Justice organized to have 150 students walk out of class at 10 in the morning and march. This march resulted in the principal, vice principal, and 36 teachers being fired.
