Descrição:
YLO: An organization that sought self-determination for Puerto Ricans in the United States and in the Caribbean. Though immediate victories for the YLO were few, their dedicated community organizing produced a generation of leaders and awakened community consciousness.
Among the groups inspired by the Black Panthers was the Young Lords Organization (YLO), later renamed the Young Lords Party, which sought self-determination for Puerto Ricans, both on the mainland and in Puerto Rico. In practical terms, the YLO focused on improving conditions in the big-city neighborhoods where most Puerto Ricans lived. New York City allowed garbage to rot in the streets of East Harlem, home to many of the city’s Puerto Ricans, and slumlords allowed the housing to become squalid. Women were especially active in the YLO, protesting sterilization campaigns that targeted Puerto Rican women and working to improve access to health care. As was true for many nationalist groups, the dedicated work of the YLO had modest immediate impact but awakened community consciousness and produced a generation of leaders, many of whom later entered electoral politics.
