After around two weeks of exploring, Balboa saw a vast ocean (the Pacific Ocean) which they named the Southern Sea. They claimed it for Spain and explored the coast. There, a local chief gave them a basket of pearls and they found many more.

Impacts of the discovery:
- The Spanish realised that there would be a lot more land to discover
- It revealed that they were not in India, and encouraged people to continue looking to for a westward route to the East Indies
- The vast numbers of pearls showed that further exploration could be very profitable
