It was a race to get to the German capital Berlin, a competition between 2 counties that would later become the Cold War. However, after getting pushed back far beyond his wildest dreams, Hitler accepted defeat and committed suicide. Germany surrendered days later, and with Italy having surrendered a few years before, it was Japan against the world.
