Angel decides that he's toyed with Buffy for long enough. But that it's not enough just to kill her, he wants her to continue to suffer after she dies. He reads an article regarding an exhibit at Joyce Summer's art gallery, featuring the Idol of Acatha. Recognizing the idol as a possible method by which a portal to a hell dimension could be opened, he begins plotting a trap in which to lure Buffy and send her to hell, to be tortured by Acatha for eternity.
