Because of the oil crisis and rising gas prices, Pierre Trudeau introduced the National Energy Program which aimed to gain more control of the oil industry, reduce the usage of oil, secure oil supplies from Canada, and redistribute some of Alberta's money from oil to the rest of Canada. This program helped Canadian petroleum companies like Petro-Canada and also started to encourage Canadians to switch from oil to electrical power sources.
