What messages did you hear/learn about being religious?
My grandmother was a very religious woman and took part in Jehovah's Witnesses. With this, me and my siblings were often invited to church with her to hear the word of god from the preacher. This church, however, made the audience answer questions spontaneously, so we were encouraged to sit up and pay attention at all times. I did have very many questions for my grandma about religion and why god did things the way that he did, and in this, we would have simple yet deep conversations in a way that my five year old brain would understand. In this time, I ended up being in the hospital for two weeks, and I vividly remember trying to fall asleep the first night that I got home and believing that god and the devil were both on my shoulders, watching and almost fighting over me. That same night, I had a dream about the devil dressed up as god trying to kill my parents, but leaving me unharmed, and these memories have stuck with me since. I almost feel lucky.
Where did the messages come from? (i.e. Parents, other family members, religious organizations, schools, teachers, media, other institutions, peers, etc.)
My grandmother was a huge influence in the parts of religion that I knew about at that point in time, and I really did believe in it.
What behaviors were encouraged, rewarded, and supported? How?
Behaviors that were definitely supported were being modest and kind, attending church, and giving religion a chance through curiosity. it was never forced upon me, but it did open my heart up and get me through this part of my life when I needed it the most, even if I was young.
What behaviors were discouraged, unsupported, and punished? How?
Behaviors that were discouraged were typical things that you would not want your child to do, such as saying curse words and being rude to other individuals.
