17 mar 1488 ano - Bartholomew Diaz's Exploration

Descrição:

A Spanish explorer that worked for the Portuguese. After many incremental voyages along the coast of Africa by other explorers that worked for the Portuguese, Diaz set sail for the tip of Africa. He was the first European to reach the Southern Tip of Africa. When he got there, he called it the Cape of Sorrows because the sail there was absolutely miserable.

Not only does the discovery of this tip proved Ptolemy's Geography's theory of a land-locked Indian Ocean wrong, it also opened up a new and cheaper spice trade route for Portugal. However, since Diaz reported that the route was difficult to traverse, Colombus tried to sell his own expedition to the West to find an easier trade route. Portugal would have none of it though because the Cape (renamed the Cape of Good Hope for propaganda in order to get people to take the route) was good for Portugal.

Thus, Colombus had to take his offer elsewhere.
