Known as “the father of modern ecology.” brought the word ecosystem into common parlance by making it the organizing concept in his 1953 Fundamentals of Ecology.

He successfully created an autonomous Institute of ecology. Odum also served as president of the Ecological Society of America in 1964. He too was known for pioneering the concept of interdependence of divergent ecosystems as the basis of how the earth functions.
