Johannes Gutenberg and other German metalsmiths noticed how metal stamps could be covered with ink and used to print books. They made metal stamps later called type, and thus the printing press was created, although similar techniques were used in China and Korea since the 9th century.

The printing revolution stimulated the literacy of laypeople and had a deep impact on people's private lives. More books were printed in Europe in the half century following the publication of Gutenberg's Bible than in all of Western history up to that point. Many capitalized on the increased demand for books. The government and the church used printing but also worried of its possible challenge to authority, and therefore tried to censor many works.
