In 1853, the United States sent an expedition of naval war ships under the command of Commodore Matthew Perry to Japan. Through this show of force (Gun force Diplomacy), the United States was able to end Japan's economic isolation and force unequal trade treaties upon it. This "visit" shocked many in Japan, who realized that Japan's milititary, economic, and diplomatic power dwarved in comparisson to the Western powers.
