• The Dawes Act was passed 1887 under President Grover Cleveland. The act allowed the federal government to break up tribal lands. The act provided land to individual Native Americans and encouraged them to become farmers. With the passing of the law, they tried to get them to confine to the white society standards, but they were unsuccessful.
