At first the Northwest was known to be owned by other countries than the US. Britain to be specific but the US and Britain came to an agreement. They both decided to make a treaty. The treaty would go on to benefit both sides but the Us being the great negotiators that they are was able to get a lot of land that would go on to form 5 of the 50 US states. Those states being Oregon Washington and Idaho. But, since some land of the Us was still owned by other countries such as Britain the other two states that they gained from the treaty were only fractions of the size that they are today. These states being both Montana and Wyoming.
