Under the leadership of young Chief Joseph, the Nez Perce tried to flee to Canada, but were stopped short of the border. In the journey, 5 bands crossed Yellowstone, raiding for supplies and waylaying tourists. It made national headlines. Easterners like their park and were surprised native Americans were resisting and pretended they were surprised the west wasn't empty. The were unsettling it int making it from Native Americans who had lives there Eventually, they surrendered.
