-republicans clashed with Mormons (Chruch of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or LDS) in Utah. Many still rejected LDS practice of plural marriage (man has many wives)
-Emmeline Wells: converted to Mormonism. Her first husband left the church, so she became the 7th wife to a church elder. She an other Mormon women pressured the Utah legislature to give women full voting rights
-Most Utah women=mormons (in non-mormon groups it was mostly male)

-suffrage recognized the central role of women in Mormon life

in constitutional debates of Reconstruction, polygamy +women's rights were intertwined topics.
-Wells wrote in Salt Lake City newspaper, Woman's Exponent (became an editor) and tried to enter a local election (initially blocked for sex, but when Utah became a state in 1896 multiple women got seats in the New legislature who were also Mormon plural wives, like Dr. Martha Hughes Cannon, the first women in a state senate.)
