19 jun 1865 ano - End of legal Slavery in the United States
Descrição:
Even though June 19th, 1865 will always been a momentous day in Americas history because it was the day when the last legal slaves were freed. The aftermath that abolishing slavery had on America left substantial amounts of work and progress to be done by the government. One piece of legislation that was established after slaves were freed was the 15ht am on February 2nd 1870, which granted black males the right to vote. The 15th amendment stated that “ The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude”. However with hind sight in 20-20, we can see that it took almost another 100 years until African Americans could fully contribute and participate in American politics and life. Shortly after African American men started to gain traction in the political world and were able to vote. It wasn't long until the 1890s when considerable steps were taken in the direction of white supremacy again by former Confederate states. African Americans continued to be marginalized and discriminated against especially when voting and trying to have their voices heard in elections. Until the Voting Rights Act of 1965 which abolished all remaining laws and devices that obstructed voting. Democracy is said to be a system of government that is governed by the population. That population consisted of lots of women and African Americans, however the people that held power in the government at the time actively discriminated against. They didn’t allow certain people to be a part of elections and government decisions simply because of their gender or race. The idea of that being a democracy shouldn’t even be muttered in the same sentence when discussing that. The ideological views that almost all of the government leaders shared in relation to race, religion, and gender and how they wished to run The United States were almost all pro slavery and therefore anti democratic. America was an oligarchy with shades of Theocracy and Aristocracy throughout slavery and during the aftermath of it as well.
