4 nov 1856 ano - First Democrat vs Republican Presidential Election

Descrição:

November 14, 1856 Democrat James Buchanan ran against Republican John C. Fremont. Millard Fillmore who is a Whig also ran. A Whig was the other political party at the time. This was the first ever presidential election that a democratic and republican candidate ran against each other. This date and instance at the time may not have meant a lot and it still might not now, but the effect that this structure has had on America's democracy is substantial. Year after year and especially every 4 years, the nation is divided into two because of the political parties that have been established. Many Americans disagree with both of the political parties and the values that they stand for, so therefore they chose not to vote and have their say in our nation's elections and decisions. Especially if the two party system sometimes forces people to vote for someone they don’t fully agree with. Or it even encourages them to not vote at all. A democracy states that the way of governing depends on the will of the people, so if the political party dynamic that has been established discourages the goal of democracy in the United States. Then it is not possible to consider America to be a democracy. Instead, a democratic republic would be a descriptor when describing the United States and their two party system.
