British Governor-General William Cavendish Bentinck (seved 1828-1836) instituted reforms to improve life for the Indian people: cut budgets and wages, introduced Indians into the lower levels of administration, where they had previously been excluded, stopped the constant expansion of areas under the company's control, reduced military expenses, outlawed widow-burning and human sacrifice
