severe economic depression-> many republicans voted out of House-> democratic majority

after: grant admin rejects souther republican's appeals for aid. red shirts (paramilitary group) openly operated. the republican governor in Mississippi (Adelbert Ames) needed aid, but grant refused. Many northern republicans told southern republicans that they were responsible for their own fate. AMes saw this would only end in bloodshed, so he told republicans to stop the fight. democratic "Redeemers" used armed force to cast false ballots and take over Mississippi.


1876- reconstruction is mostly over and republican govs (backed by U.S. military units) were only in 3 states, elsewhere in the south former confederates and allies held the power
