Ray Charles was popular for secularizing gospel music as well as being truly unique to the industry. He was signed to Atlantic Records and played a plethora of the time's popular styles. By the time he was seven, Charles was completely blind due to glaucoma. Because of this he studied at the Florida school of death and blind in St. Augustine, which is where he learned to play the piano. Many people consider him to be a phenomena, and even called him "The Genius," but to his friends he was always "Brother Ray."

His signature look of sunglasses came to be when he was in a band called the Florida playboys.
His first hit was "I Got a Woman" in 1955.
