He said that they were fighting for the “sacred right of self-government,” including slaveholding.

-secessionists didn't believe lincoln when he promised to leave slavery alone in existing slave states. they were worried that ppl against slavery would spark slave revolts (and they feared racial mixture/amalgamation between white women and black men). They would rather "preserve black subordination and white supremacy" than stay with the Union.
