1 set 1167 ano - The Treaty of Falaise
Descrição:
After joining rebels against England, King William I of Scotland was captured and forced to agree to the Treaty of Falaise, which was ultimately a declaration of England's dominion over Scotland. King Henry II had total control over the affairs of William and Scotland for over twenty years until the treaty was annulled by William's successor, King Richard I.
Extract from the treaty:
"William, king of Scots, has become liegeman of the lord king (Henry) against every man in respect of Scotland and in respect of all his other lands; and he has done fealty to him as his liege lord, as all the other men of the lord king (Henry) are wont to do. Likewise, he has done homage to Henry the king, son of King Henry, saving only the fealty which he owes to the lord king, his father."

What does this tell us about peace?
This peace treaty relied heavily on the idea of an enemy's submission of power as a way to gain justice and maintain a peaceful relationship. The terms within the treaty seem to punish William I for rebelling by taking away any freedoms he might have had. This treaty illustrates the importance in asserting power dynamics as a method of mantaining order for medieval kingdoms.
