3 fev 1312 ano - Limited Peace within Conflict

Descrição:

As the War of Scottish Independence raged on, different techniques were used between battles to delay fighting and maintain some semblance of order.

The Chronicle of Lanercost describes:
"Now, while the aforesaid things were getting done with Piers, the march of England had no defender against the Scots, and therefore they rendered tribute to Robert in order to have peace for a while. Meanwhile, however, the Scots burnt the town of Norham, because the castle did them great injury, and they took away men as prisoners and also cattle. "
(The Chronicle of Lanercost, 1272-1346: Translated, with notes by Sir Herbert Maxwell)

What does this mean for peace?
Creating pockets of peace, even deep within a war, was necessary in order to recoup troops and supplies. The attempt to do this by rendering tribute to the King of Scotland illustrates that respect for a King is a cultural custom in establishing peace. The failure of this attempt at peae though proves that just respect for a leader was not enough.
