The War of Scottish Independence ended with an agreement of peace between King Edward II and Robert the Bruce.

John of Fordum writes, "Seven years after this, in the year 1327, peace was finally concluded between England and Scotland, and the English king, by a formal instrument ratified by the English Parliament, renounced all claim of superiority over Scotland and declared " that the said kingdom, according to its ancient boundaries observed in the days of Alexander in., should remain unto Robert king of Scots, and unto his heirs and successors, free and divided from the kingdom of England without any subjection,
right of service, claim or demand whatever; and that all writings that might have been executed at any time to the contrary, should be held as void and of no effect."
This practically and to all real intents and purposes terminated the great controversy between the two countries, and the question involved in it passed from the field of political discussion into the domain of historical speculation, and became more a subject of theoretical inquiry, though still one of national interest, in which national feeling was keenly involved though the independence of the kingdom no longer depended on it. "

What does this mean for peace?
John of Fordum's observation on the importance of 'national feeling' in determining the relationship between England and France speaks to the wider connection between identity and conflict. The war was largely based on the dispute of the idea that the English were superior to the Scottish -- this is proved by the Treaty of Edinburgh-Northampton which ends the war and establishes Scotland as an equal power. The feelings of national superiority in the identity of both nations fuelled the conflict and the peace negotiations that arose from it.
