The Western Empire fell first, in 456 AD. The Eastern Empire remained until the fall of Constantinople. When the Western Empire (Rome) fell, western Europe collapsed into the dark ages, Germanic tribes carved it out into small feudal kingdoms. The first empire that was organized into an entity that resemble a replacement was the holy Roman Empire by Charlemagne.
