Leon Trotsky was a communist and an agitator. His main roles in the Russian Revolution were in the October Revolution of 1917 where he acted as the main leader, and his activeness in the Soviet Union. Trotsky became a Bolshevik party member and was elected to be a member of the Bolshevik Central Committee while in jail. When he was released, he became elected chairman of the Petrograd Soviet of Workers’ and Soldiers’ Deputies, and started the revolution. He and all his soldiers would "only protect and defend the Soviets," and when Lenin died in 1924, he tried and lost leadership of the Soviets to Stalin.
