On this date the North launched a surprise attack on the weaker south. With Soviet and Chinese backing, the north made significant progress, backing up the UN and ROK forces into the Pusan Pocket before finally being turned back after the landings at Inchon. The war would continue for another 3 years, only ended by an armistance, and the Korean peninsula remains divided to this day.
