American Party- split along lines due to slavery, nominated former Whig pres Millard Fillmore

Democrats-popular sovereignty, liked Kansas-Nebraska Act, nominated James Buchanan of Pennsylvanaia (prosouthern, won, unity relied on him to hold the Dem party together which he couldn't)
