1 jan 1850 ano - Compromise of 1850 passes (Fugitive Slave Act)

Descrição:

Laws passed in 1850 that were meant to resolve the dispute over the status of slavery in the territories. Key elements included the admission of California as a free state and a new Fugitive Slave Act.

"To mollify southern planters, the compromise included a new Fugitive Slave Act strengthening federal aid to slave catchers. To satisfy various groups of northerners, the legislation admitted California as a free state, resolved a boundary dispute between New Mexico and Texas in favor of New Mexico, and abolished the slave trade (but not slavery) in the District of Columbia. Finally, the compromise organized the rest of the conquered Mexican lands into the territories of New Mexico and Utah and, invoking popular sovereignty, left the issue of slavery in the hands of their residents"

Effects: preserved national unity (let southern idea of "no Union w/out slavery" continue as it did since 1787) but southerners were still afraid, Nashville Convention, deflated the secessionist bubble briefly, expansion of Underground railroad and slaves fleeing to Canada or forming vigilance communities

Overtime, southerners wanted to extend slavery into the West, Caribbean, northern Mexico, Central America. Northerners wanted freedom for fugitive slaves and free soil in west. Neither accepted the Compromise.

Frederick Douglass and many abolitionists stop their nonviolence approach due to the Fugitive Slave Act-> Christiana Pennsylvania in Sept. 1851
