The South had consistently denied African Americans the right to vote. In 1964, the SNCC and other civil rights organisations focused on Mississippi. They intended to register Mississippi black people to vote, form a "Freedom Democratic Party" to compete with the white-only Mississippi Democratic Party, establish freedom schools, as well as set up community centres where black people could get legal and medical help.
