It is understandable that Beecher would want to stop around this time. After all, he had been preaching since he was quite young. In relation to temperance, his message had spread far beyond the United States even into Europe, so in that sense, his mission was complete. The ripest fruits of his work would not be seen until eight decades after his death however when alcohol was banned entirely. There were other things Beecher was also interested in besides temperance, such as abolition, so likely, he could also focus on this even more than he already was.
