The beginnings of the National Psychiatric Hospital dates back to 1869, when Mr. Vicente Herrera Z. was president of the Board of Charity, who observed the need to care for patients with mental illness who were admitted to the San Juan de Dios Hospital. That same year, Dr. Carlos Durán Cartín returned from Europe with knowledge and new ideas for health care.
