Descrição:

Wangari Maathai was a Kenyan activist that fought for human rights, democracy, and the environment. In 2004, she became the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize for her contributions, and she became the first female professor ever in Kenya. Maathai was a strong opponent of Daniel arap Moi's regime and "played an active part in the struggle for democracy" (Wangari Maathai – Facts). She also started the Green Belt Movement, aimed at countering deforestation by encouraging women to plant trees in their areas. The movement began in 1977 and resulted in over 30 million trees being planted in local environments.
