Ballistics- the study of projectiles in motion. The NIBIN is a nationally interconnected , computer assisted ballistics imaging system used by forensic firearms examiners to obtain or have computerized image of the unique marks made on bullets or and/or cartridge cases when guns are fired through/by NIBIN, these images can then be compared rapidly with all other images in the system of about 220 federal, state and local law enforcement laboratories. In the way, evidence from multiple crime scenes can be linked identifying patterns of criminal activity and leading to the apprehension of suspects. The Bureau of Alcohol, tobacco and firearms (ATF) has assumed the lead federal role in the further development and deployment of NIBIN.
