Jailhouse Rock was created by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller as a kind of tongue-in-cheek "theme song" of sorts for Presley to sing in his movie sharing that same name. However, when it got to the King he sang it as straight rock and roll.
After the films release the song quickly topped the charts, and stayed there for the next seven weeks, all in that same fall of '57.
