In the later days of the war, Americans wanted to bring a fall to the Japanese troops on island Iwo Jima. During this battle, most Japanese were intent on defeating the U.S. or die trying. 23,000+ Japanese either committed suicide or fought until the death during this battle, and only less than 220 surrendered, the death toll made this the costliest battle in marine corps history.
