The AFL was founded in Columbus, Ohio by an alliance of craft unions disaffected from the Knights of Labor. It was supposed to serve as an umbrella organization for other unions. It's ultimate goal was to gain collective bargaining powers for its member unions so that they could fight for better wages, hours, and working conditions for workers.
