Henry Clay and Stephen Douglas were the two important figures behind the creation of the Compromise of 1850. The compromise's main purpose was to prevent further territorial expansion, while also recreating a new Fugitive Slave Act. The five main points on the compromise are:
1) California entered the Union as a free state.
2) Texas-New Mexico Act made New Mexico a territory and set the Texas boundary at its present location
3) Utah Act set up the Utah territory
4) New Fugitive Slave Act
5) The public sale of slaves was abolished in the District of Columbia
