The filmmakers of The Rum Diary showed their respect for Dr. Hunter S. Thompson by inviting journalist Manny Suarez to the set on Friday.

Suarez also worked on the San Juan newspaper where Thompson gathered the experiences that would later inspire his novel. Suarez found the recreated newspaper offices on Calle Tetuan in Old San Juan to be an uncannily faithful reproduction of the newsroom he remembers: "I had the opportunity to be on the set," Saurez told Melba Bruguera of El Vocero. "It was great! It was an incredible time."
